Il Divo (2008 - Paolo Sorrentino) ENGLISH

This movie tells the political and legal story of former Italian first Minister Giulio Andreotti (played by Toni Servillo). G.A. had been elected First Minister 7 times and 25 times Minister (from the 60’s till the 90’s). Despite his brilliant career he was involved in the main scandals of Italian history. He was also accused of being part of the mafia’s organization named “Cosa Nostra”.

After few scenes with murder at the beginning of the movie, G.A becomes (for his 7th time) the First Minister of the Italian Republic (April 1991). The origin of G.A’s power is the support of a group of parliamentarians called corrente andreottiana. They are a sub-party within Democrazia Cristiana, the main Italian party from the WWII until the year 1993. So far, G.A. looks to fit perfectly the Italian political scenario until one of his follower (Vittorio Sbardella) stops supporting him. Because of this, the influence of the first minister decreases becomes to decrease to the point where he fails to gain election for the position of President of the Italian Republic.
Sorrentino’s movie is one of the best Italian movies in years. The origin of this masterpiece is the source of all information: despite the grotesque humor, the story has been fully written according to trial reports, interviews and newspaper articles. My final valuation is 5 out of 5!
